When temperatures run hot outdoors, we instinctually want to make temperatures indoors as cool as possible. But when outdoor temperatures rise higher than normal, it's important to be mindful of how your system may be affected. Today we will be sharing important information regarding running your air conditioner during a heat wave. Read on to learn what you should and shouldn’t do during this period.Running Your AC During A Heat Wave
The Stressful Effect on Your System
Air conditioners are simply not designed to withstand extreme hot weather conditions, as they don't commonly occur. During the out of the ordinary days when temperatures are hotter than normal, your system needs to work extra hard to cool your home. Here are some things to avoid during a heat wave:
- Having your AC set to "ON" all day. Opt for the "AUTO" function instead.
- Setting extremely low temperatures. This puts a lot of strain on your system.
- Keeping vents closed. There's no need to run your AC if there is no ventilation. Make sure your vents are open while your AC functions.
System Overload Isn’t Uncommon
It’s not uncommon for air conditioner systems to break down during heat waves. A common instinct is to blast your AC as cold as possible to feel optimal comfort. However, this puts a lot of pressure on your unit and causes a lot of overworking that your system may not be able to handle. In order to avoid your system from breaking down, do things to release some pressure such as:
- Only running the AC when necessary.
- Limiting the use of other in-home appliances.
- Reducing indoor heat by turning off lights, TVs, etc.
