Preparing Your Home for the Fall Season

Preparing Your Home for the Fall Season

Fall is a time of transition. Not only are we moving closer to the busiest holidays of the year, we're moving through a change in weather. Getting your home ready for those two changes means a number of tasks that need to be taken care of in the fall.

Windows and Doors
One of the most important tasks this fall is getting your home as weather-tight as possible. Check windows and doors for gaps, and seal them with quality caulk. Make repairs to driveways and sidewalks to limit the damage caused by winter's freezing and thawing.

Roof
If you have any concerns at all about your roof, address them now. Winter freezing and thawing, along with the persistent presence of snow and ice on your roof, will make old leaks steadily worse as Winter drones on. Wintertime roof repairs are also more dangerous, and new shingles will not soften and bond together during cold temperatures as they do in the Summer and Fall . Be sure to inspect it thoroughly, even if it's just by going in the attic and checking for water stains on the underside of the roof.

Rennovation
Fall's cooler weather is a great time for bigger renovation jobs. It might be the time for those replacement windows and doors you've been contemplating, or perhaps new carpet as you prepare for holiday guests.

Heating
Get your heating system ready. Change the filters and have a contractor service and clean the heat pump or furnace. And if you're dreading winter's higher heat bills, check on a Napoleon fireplace. As everyone sits around watching football or celebrating Thanksgiving, a fireplace will concentrate the heat in that room without wasting energy heating up empty rooms.

Decor
Remember your Fall and Winter decor, too. A Majestic fireplace with a few carefully-chosen pieces of fall decor can give the entire room a different look without the expense and work of a real renovation. After Thanksgiving, switch those items out with Christmas items like garland and stockings, and you've done another easy overhaul with your fireplace as a focal point.
