Your HVAC system is one of the most important and expensive components in your home and should be protected from large amounts of dust. Most home renovation projects produce huge amounts of dust and dirt. Being that the HVAC system is designed to circulate the air in the environment it works in, large amounts of dust will quickly accumulate and even clog many of the crucial components of the system. Even relatively small projects can produce enough airborne contaminants to drastically decrease the performance of an otherwise healthy system. Keep on reading to learn how Maple Air, Heating and Cooling located in Vaughan, advices you to protect your HVAC system during remodelling. How to Protect Your HVAC System During Remodelling
Protect Your Investment
• Cover Your Vents and Registers: In the immediate areas where the remodelling work is being done cover all of the vents and registers to limit the direct entry of dust into the system. It’s important to note that proper airflow is paramount for an HVAC system so try not to close or block too many of them.
• Check the Air Filters: Regularly inspecting and cleaning the air filter(s) during the renovation project is important to prevent substantial amounts of dust from entering the system.
• Periodic Cleaning of the Work Area: It is important that the individual(s) performing the remodelling clean up the work area daily. This will help prevent the spreading and accumulation of dust and debris which can be easily stirred up and become airborne during casual movement through the work area.
• Turn off the HVAC System: Depending on the season and current weather conditions at the time of the remodelling job, it may be prudent to completely turn the system off while the work is being done. Turning off the system during high dust-producing operations such as cutting, grinding, and paint spraying will help tremendously in reducing the amount of dust entering the system.
Follow up After the Work Is Completed
Finally, after all the work is completed, a thorough and proper inspection must be done to the entire HVAC system. Even small amounts of dust collection on certain critical components can lead to drastically reduced cooling and heating efficiency. This inspection should include checking the indoor cooling coil, blower and motor, and all of the duct-work to ensure that no dust has accumulated on these parts.
