Avoid getting scammed when purchasing your furnace and air conditioner

Scamming has, unfortunately, become quite prevalent in today’s day and age. You’ve likely heard stories about individuals getting targeted by telephone, government, and even HVAC scams. Evading scams starts by being informed and understanding the key signs.

In January 2022, CBC news went undercover to highlight HVAC scams. Individuals have been targeted by specific companies which resulted in them spending thousands of dollars on new systems they did not need, hidden liens in their contracts, and overall unethical practices.

It is very unfortunate when we see this behavior going on in the industry; preying on innocent individuals to swindle money from them. Actions like these have caused mistrust towards the entire industry. The good news is that not all HVAC companies are like this. At Maple Air Heating and Cooling, our priority is always finding the right solutions and delivering them in an ethical manner for our customers to create transparency. Today, we will be discussing how to avoid getting scammed in the HVAC industry.

Always Read the Fine Print
Whenever you are about to sign a contract, it is imperative that you read over every single detail. Don’t feel pressured to sign anything if you need extra time to review or a second opinion. Remember that it’s okay to ask questions. During the CBC Marketplace Special, a moment highlighted was a small fine print incident that indicated the customer’s monthly payment will increase 3.5% every year during the term of her contract. This was news to her, as it was not mentioned verbally by the technician but was deeply hidden in the fine print. Make sure you are aware of every single detail prior to signing any paperwork.

Being Too Pushy
A salesperson, or technician, being extremely pushy is a red flag. If you feel that someone is doing anything and everything to try to convince you to purchase or sign immediately. Take a step back, ask for a written estimate with a heating and cooling scope of work review it with your family or a trusted individual.

Get a Second Opinion
If you’re unsure about average pricing for products or installation, don’t be afraid to get a second opinion. Feel informed before making your choice. Do your research and work with HVAC companies which will educate you on your purchase process and will present you competitive pricing where it fits within your budget. It is important to understand that each company will have different pricing schemes which will cause fluctuation in pricing. Your goal is to ensure that you work with an organization that will stand by their words and does not persuade you into a contract with limited access to terms and conditions.

Scammers will prey on anyone who will fall into their trap. However, elderly people, newcomers, and uninformed individuals are more likely to be the target.
